I STARTED THIS JOURNEY TWELVE YEARS AGO IN BOISE, IDAHO WITH THE CREATION OF AN INSTALLATION FOR THE TREEFORT MUSIC FESTIVAL: A GIANT STRING OF “PAPEL PICADO” MADE FROM SEVEN, DOUBLE LAYERED, 8’ X 10’ POLYVINYL TARPS, AND MANY COLORS OF DUCK TAPE. I CALL THEM “TARPAGES”.

FOUR OF THE ORIGINAL TARPAGES REMAIN. THEY HAVE GONE THROUGH MANY REBIRTHS WITH THE ADDITION OF PAINTED PATTERNS, AND EMBELLISHMENTS OF BEADS AND SEQUINS. AND, THEY HAVE MULTIPLIED AS I’VE CONTINUED TO CREATE MANY MORE, NOW GOING THROUGH THEIR SECOND, OR EVEN THIRD REBIRTHS.

PLAYING WITH UNORTHODOX MATERIALS HAS EXPANDED WITH MY ADDITION OF “ZOOKS”: MAGAZINES ALTERED WITH FOLDED PAGES, PAINTED WITH PATTERNS, AND BLOCKS OF COLOR WHICH REVEAL ONLY THE WORDS I CHOOSE TO USE TO CREATE POEMS. BLACKOUT POETRY HAS BECOME A THIRD PLAYER IN MY MAZE OF CHAMBERS.
